Himachal Pradesh
Known as
Dev Bhoomi, or “Land of the Gods”, Himachal Pradesh is one of
the most beautiful and unspoiled regions in India. Here you find
a landscape that varies from the lush and pretty Kangra Valley
with its windy roads and small villages to the mighty Himalayan
Snow Mountains and remote glacial valleys of Lahaul, Spiti and
Chamba, accessible only in the summer when the snow melts on
the higher passes.
Facts about Himachal Located in north-western
India the state of Himachal Pradesh is bordered by Jammu and
Kashmir to the north, the Punjab to the west and southwest,
Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to the south, Uttaranchal to the southeast
and Tibet to the east. Terrain
Mostly mountainous, cultivated valleys and
forested slopes. The altitude varies from 350 to 6,975 meters.

Temperatures vary from region to
region – touching
40c in the lower valleys in the summer and falling to below –20c
in winter in the mountains. The average annual rainfall is between
152 cms and 172 cms. The alpine region can remain under snow
for 5 to 6 months of the year.

The population of Himachal is around 6,100,000, with the average density being
93 persons per square km. Agriculture and horticulture support about 70% of the
population. The literacy rate is 63%. Religion
Majority Hindu, with Buddhists, Sikhs, Christians and Muslims.
Languages
Hindi, Pahari Hindi and several other dialects. Also (in the
towns) English and Punjabi.

districts Bilaspur, Chamba, Hamirpur, kangra, Kinnaur, Kullu,Lahul_Spiti,
Mandi,Shimla,Sirmour Solana and UnaShimla.

AirportsThe
closest international airports are New Delhi and Amritsar. The nearest regional
airports are Chandigarh in the Punjab, and within the state Shimala Bhuntar (Kullu)
and Gaggal (Kangra.)
Railheads
The closest broad-gauge lines are at Una Kalka and Pathankot.
Narrow gauge lines run from Kalka to Shimla and Pathankot to
Jogindernagar.
Road
network NH 21 and NH 22 are two national highways
